PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Responsible for the care, control and security of persons arrested and detained for law violations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Supervise and control inmate behavior in the corrections facility through the use of
direct contact, surveillance devices, patrolling and inspections of persons and areas.
Admit and release inmates into and from the corrections facility which may include entering information into computer and determining if prior arrest record exists, creating, new inmate files, taking pictures and fingerprints of prisoner and completing identification cards.
Search inmates' persons, clothing, mail, living areas and other facility areas for
weapons or contraband.
Establish, maintain and update inmate records, accounts and files, including
inventorying and securing inmate personal property. ·
Direct inmates while they are moving through the facility, monitoring actions and
approving entry or exit. Initiate and enforce inmate disciplinary action.
Supervise and arrange inmate activities such as visitation, counseling, social services,
court appearances, recreation and laundry.
Provide instruction to inmates regarding emergency procedures to be initiated in case
of fire, escape, disaster or riot.
Perform medical support services including administering medication, arranging medical and dental care and supervising inmates during such care, investigating inmate injuries and determining necessity of emergency medical treatment, and applying first aid as needed.
Prepare and serve food and supervise cleanup as needed.
Appears in court to prevent evidence and testify against person accused of crimes.
Complete detailed and accurate reports, logs and other official records that document
inmate activity or involvement in incidents.
Operate and maintain equipment; tools and devices related to corrections operations
(i.e. corrections vehicle, photographic camera, cell doors, fire equipment, computer).
Cleans facility and departmental offices, performs general maintenance and reports mechanical failures.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Perform other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCEAND ABILITY:
Knowledge of the basic principles of mathematics and the ability to post simple accounts according to established procedures.
Knowledge of and ability to utilize correct grammar, spelling and punctuation in preparing required reports, composing narratives and completing daily logs.
Ability to learn, understand and apply the principles and techniques associated with
the operation of a correctional facility.
Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to utilize sound independent judgment in stressful and emergency situations and when dealing with violent or hostile prisoners..
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, law enforcement agencies, prisoners, government officials, supervisors and fellow employees.
Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all departmental communications, documents and correspondence.
Ability to type accurately using a typewriter, word processor and/or personal computer.
ESSENTIALEDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONAND/ORLICENSES:
Graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the high school
GED test.
Must possess a valid State of Iowa drivers license at the time of hire.
Must obtain certification from the 40 hour jail course as required by the State of lowa
within twelve months of the date of hire.
ESSENTIAL SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least 18 years of age at the date of hire.
Must have standard visual acuity of not less than 20/200 in both eyes which may be correctable to 20/20. Must display adequate color and peripheral vision in both eyes.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Jailers are required to perform physical activities to support the control and supervision of inmates, including but not limited to the following, ability to lift (50 - 100 lbs.), subdue combative prisoners, operate restraint devices, walk and stand continuously and mop or sweep floors.
Jailers are often placed in a position of physical and mental stress.
