A small group which included members of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen ( BMA ) and the Collierville Environmental Commission ( CEC ) braved a chilly , damp day and gathered on Halle Park’s walking trail last Friday , March 1 , to celebrate Arbor Day .
They stood within sight of the two bald cypress trees the CEC had planted near the water while Mayor Stan Joyner read his 2024 Arbor Day proclamation . The message acknowledged that trees serve the community in preventing erosion , providing shade , and serving as habitats for wildlife , as well as providing many products for human life . The proclamation ended with the designation of Collierville as a “Tree City USA” from the
National Arbor Day Foundation
.
The first Arbor Day was celebrated in 1872 in the prairies of Nebraska and resulted in the planting of about one million trees . Tennessee adopted the holiday in 1875 .
“Tree City USA” is a partnership between the Arbor Day Foundation , theU . S . Forest Serviceand the
National Association of State Foresters . These organizations set the standards for becoming a Tree City and ensure that every qualifying community has a viable tree management program and that no community would be excluded because of size .
This is the 19th year that Collierville has qualified as a Tree City . The Collierville Environmental Commission takes charge of the planting of the Arbor Day tree every year . This year’s choice , the bald cypress , is a hardy tree that both supports wildlife and grows into a beautiful shape . Great choice , CEC! Thank you for all your hard work!
