This past Wednesday was the Central Fort Bend Chamber’s annual State of the City luncheon with the theme of Richmond’s 185
th
Year Anniversary . In my address , I shared some of the achievements Richmond has made since last year’s State of the City address . I am still excited about two items I pushed for when I took office . The first I shared was that in addition to the over 65 Homestead Exemption of $6 , 000 ,
for the first time in 185 years
, Richmond residents who are homeowners , may now qualify for a 1 . 5% , minimum of $5 , 000 , Homestead Exemption! It’s a modest start but in this economy , every little bit helps . The second was explaining the new , transparent way that volunteers are selected to serve on the different committees , boards , and commissions . Some history I told was that Richmond’s history began in 1837 which was the same year that Texas was annexed into the United States and that Richmond was incorporated before the city had even been laid out .
I read that back in 1837 the settlers in the Texas Coastal Bend said that fighting mosquitos was worse than fighting the Indians . That makes me itch just thinking about it! I have the smallest mosquitos with the biggest bite living in our back yard . I’ve walked the yard and all containers are flipped over so they can’t catch water from our sprinkler . I’ll just carry around a can of insect repellant in my back pocket .
A reminder to check your yard for standing water for this reason…you don’t want to be the neighbor growing mosquitos this season! I made a rhyme!
