GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of the Right-of-Way & Channel Maintenance Crew Leader, the employee will perform a variety of tasks involving semi-skilled equipment operation and landscaping tasks in the maintenance of various rights-of-ways and stormwater channels, creeks, and rivers throughout the Town. Maintenance operations include, but are not limited to, mowing, planting, edging, trimming, blowing of leaves, mulching, litter pickup, and removing debris from waterways. Responsibilities also include assisting with spraying of chemicals and cleaning and routine maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Mows and maintains rights-of-way throughout the Town, including State and Town-owned;
Collect litter from rights-of-way throughout the Town, including State and Town-owned;
Prunes trees and shrubberies, plants, waters, seeds, and fertilizes grass, trees, and flowers;
Sprays herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals; blows, rakes, and picks up leaves;
Perform channel maintenance by hand to remove blockages in waterways within Town limits;
Drives truck to and from worksites; hauls supplies, equipment, and materials;
Performs routine maintenance and replacement of machinery, equipment, and/or vehicles;
Responsible for using the sweeper truck to clean curbs and gutters in accordance with the schedule set by the department for all streets within Town limits;
Works in weather conditions that include, but not limited to severe hot and or cold weather; severe conditions such as snow, rain and/or hail;
During inclement weather assist in clean up; cut up and load tree limbs and other debris;
Operates a variety of equipment, power tools, lawnmowers, chainsaws, weed eaters, sprayers, and hand saws;
Manually loads and unloads materials from the trucks;
Attend training workshops and classes related to job duties;
Could be required to work a flexible work schedule that includes nights, weekends and holidays, from time to time;
Performs related duties as needed;
Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of tools, materials, and methods used in unskilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance work; Knowledge of landscape architecture and general construction; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Knowledge of spraying and fertilization programs; Working knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town employees, outside Town agencies and organizations, and the general public; Ability to analyze information and make recommendations
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and one to two years of experience in unskilled and semi-skilled grounds and landscaping maintenance work or a combination of experience and/or education (including minimum education requirements).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
Must have either a valid North Carolina or South Carolina driver’s license and be able to maintain a safe driving record.
Must obtain a core and ornamental and turf pesticide license within 1 year of employment.
Must keep all pesticide and other licenses up to date as required for the position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform heavy work and manual labor exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to perform mechanical or skilled trade tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as inspections, landscaping, and operating equipment.
Must be able to work in environmental conditions that require both inside and outside work.
Must be able to work in conditions that are subject to contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids.
