PHOENIX – Due to the overwhelming success of the recent “Save Lives , Don’t DUI” campaign , the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and Uber will extend their partnership to offer a twenty - dollar discount to first time users of the ride sharing service for another month . More than 800 people participated in the campaign during its initial run in the last two weeks of 2015 . The discount offer , which is enough to cover the full cost of the majority of trips requested in the Phoenix metro area , will now be continued until February 8 , 2016 .
“We were very pleased to see so many people take advantage of this safe and affordable transportation alternative during the holiday season , ” said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery . “By extending this successful campaign with Uber we hope to continue to encourage people to make the smart choice not to drink and drive during a period when we have many popular sporting events taking place throughout the Valley , like the College Football Championship , the Cardinals playoff game , the Devils–Coyotes hockey game , and the Waste Management Phoenix Open . ”

New users can access the twenty - dollar discount on their first ride by downloading the Uber app and entering the promo code FREETRIP . Existing Uber users can enter to win two tickets to the Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament during the first week in February by entering the promo code WMOWIN . From December 16 to 31 , 2015 , 403 first time Uber users applied the promo code to receive the discount on their first trip . Another 427 existing Uber users applied a promo code , which entered them to win free transportation on New Year’s Eve . For every new user who signed up with the promo code and took a ride , Uber agreed to donate $5 to the Arizona chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving . This resulted in a total donation of $1 , 200 to MADD for the two - week holiday campaign .
Since the 2013 Phoenix launch of Uber’s low cost ridesharing option , uberX , more than 250 , 000 people have used the service between the hours of midnight and 3:00 a . m . The total number of trips taken by Uber riders during those hours has increased fourteen - fold since New Year’s Eve 2014 .
