Pay: $3,296 per month / $19.02 per hour
Post 6-Month Probation: $3,395 per month / $19.59 per hour
Immediate Supervisor: Landfill Operator IV
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This person will perform landfill operation duties using heavy equipment including dozer, loader, compactor, excavator, and other equipment as needed in the landfill or other departments. Responsible for maintenance of equipment; will assist in moving equipment to and from landfill and to various other job sites. Must be willing to adopt and exhibit the City of Brownwood “I SERVE” Core Values.
EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC WORK PERFORMED:
1) Primary job at landfill is excavation; alternating operation of equipment with other operators; 2) Spread and/or compact refuse with compactor; 3) Cover portions of the cell as necessary with daily or intermediate cover using haul truck; 4) Use dozer to rip rock, clear vegetation, and spread wood chips within landfill; 5) Operate roll-off truck emptying dumpster; 6) Will perform duties necessary for maintenance, repair and construction of roads and drainage ways in accordance with established grades; 7) Read and understand grade settings; 8) Will perform manual labor as needed, to include use of hand and power tools; 9) Perform routine and preventative maintenance on all landfill equipment; 10) Perform minor repairs on all equipment; 11) Assist Fleet Technician in repair of all landfill equipment; 12) Assist in control of fires that may occur at the landfill; 13) Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Outdoors mostly, with adverse weather conditions. Ability to transport self from site to site. Ability to drive various types of equipment and vehicles to and from various work sites. Employee will work in extreme temperatures, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, twisting, climbing and lifting to perform duties of the job. Employee will work with chemicals, mechanical, electrical and traffic hazards. Employee will work in confined spaces, where extreme hazards exist while performing duties. Employee is frequently required to perform lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 80 pounds. Employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, noises, fumes, odors, water and mud. Employee must be able to walk on slippery, loose, uneven and sloped surfaces. Hazards exposed to are heavy equipment, recycling equipment, fires, Household Hazardous Waste, Putrescible Waste, Automotive Waste and private vehicular traffic, possible exposure to refrigerants.
CONTACT WITH OTHERS:
Heavy contact with the public and other employees daily.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate; Ability to read and write and follow verbal and written instructions. Three or more years’ experience in operation of heavy equipment preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability and skill to operate heavy equipment and trucks safely and efficiently; possess good driving skills; possess mechanical abilities to perform preventative maintenance on equipment. Ability to perform manual labor and use hand and power tools.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
Must obtain a Texas Class A Driver License with “N” endorsement within 1 year of employment. Obtain a Waste Screening Certificate within 2 years.
