Hey , so the U . S . Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) just announced that they ' ve made a deal with Shore Hill Apartments in Brooklyn , New York . This agreement resolves a review they did on discrimination in their marketing and tenanting procedures . Shore Hill Apartments is this big complex with 558 units , and they offer affordable subsidized housing to families with older members or members with disabilities . HUD enforces the Fair Housing Act and other civil rights laws to make sure there ' s no discrimination based on race , color , religion , etc . Basically , they ' re all about giving everyone a fair shot at housing opportunities . This whole thing came about because HUD noticed that there were low numbers of Black and Hispanic residents in the complex , which seemed a bit fishy . Turns out , the complex had some restrictive occupancy policies that were keeping families from applying . So , HUD stepped in to make sure that everyone has an equal chance to learn about , apply to , and live in these subsidized housing units . The Agreement includes a fund of $510 , 000 to compensate people who were denied housing due to the restrictive occupancy policy or because of their disabilities . It also requires the creation of a new waitlist after advertising to those who are less likely to apply , with a minimum of $10 , 000 allocated for advertising , outreach , and website development . The Agreement also states that the property will not give preference to elderly individuals and will consider all qualified applicants equally , including those with disabilities and those aged 62 or over . The property ' s occupancy policy will also be revised to align with local laws . It ' s important to note that this Agreement does not mean the housing providers have admitted to any violations of Title VI , Section 504 , or other laws .
