In a critical step towards increasing access and enhancing outdoor recreation , Shelby Township clinched a $164 , 500 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Development grant to construct a universally accessible boat launch at River Bends Park .
The cutting - edge "EZ Launch" boat facility surpasses ADA - compliance standards and provides a safe and barrier - free entry point for kayakers and canoeists , eliminating mobility obstacles . The initiative connects River Bends Park with neighboring communities , thereby enhancing water trail accessibility for all .
“The current launch area at River Bends Park Fishing Site presents several difficulties for citizens with disabilities due to its dirt path and steep decline , limiting their ability to enjoy this section of the water trail , ” Shelby Township Parks , Recreation and Maintenance Director Joe Youngblood said . "Recognizing the need for a more robust network of accessible launches , our Board of Trustees and Parks and Recreation staff took action to ensure people of all abilities can fully utilize the Clinton River .
The project received additional financial support from grants awarded by the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and the National Environmental Education Foundation , amounting to $50 , 000 and $20 , 000 , respectively . The township secured an impressive $234 , 500 to fund the project entirely .
After officials broke ground for the new launch in July 2023 , the "EZ Launch" boat launch is poised to redefine accessibility standards , ensuring that individuals of all abilities can enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities River Bends Park offers .
This project is slated for completion by summer 2024 and marks a significant stride towards breaking down barriers and fostering a more accessible outdoor experience .
Shelby Township ' s project stood out among 53 recreation development initiatives and land acquisitions recommended by the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board to the Michigan Legislature for funding in 2024 , totaling $27 , 339 , 100 . The competition was fierce , with 123 applications vying for consideration in 2023 , seeking $51 . 9 million in funding . Each eligible application underwent a rigorous evaluation based on criteria approved by the Trust Fund board .
"This grant award from the DNR is a testament to the collaborative efforts and dedication of everyone involved in making the River Bends Accessible Kayak Launch Park Improvements project a reality , " Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis said . “Congratulations to everyone who contributed to a successful Shelby Township grant award from the DNR . ”

The National Environmental Education Foundation , through the 2022 - 23 Driving Mobility and Accessibility on Public Lands Grant , has been a driving force behind efforts to enhance mobility and accessibility on public lands and waterways . Funding from vehicle sales of the Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition and the RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition has significantly improved access , comfort , and enjoyment for visitors of all abilities . This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to making outdoor spaces accessible and enjoyable for everyone , regardless of their physical abilities .
