City of Goodyear Arizona - Goodyear Police and Fire Departments Collaborate on Investigation that Resulted in Conviction for Goodwill Arson Fire 11 January 2024 ( news )

On December 14 , 2023 , 40 - year - old David Wilson of Phoenix , pled guilty to Arson of a Structure and received one year in jail and supervised probation , for the July 8 , 2023 , Goodwill arson fire .
Background:
On 07/08/2023 , around 2:30a . m . , the Goodyear Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the Goodwill store located at 390 N . Litchfield Rd . in reference to a semi - trailer fire . Firefighters extinguished the fire , but the semi - trailer was a complete loss . There was damage to the Goodwill building , an adjacent garbage dumpster , and an industrial trash compactor . Patrol officers conducted the initial investigation , locating video surveillance , which allowed them to determine the incident was criminal .
The Goodyear Fire Investigator determined that the fire was likely set , and gathered security footage which showed a person of interest . Goodyear detectives were called in , assuming the investigation . The timeline of the fire was determined , and additional videos were secured , which identified the person of interest as David Wilson .
On 07/31/23 , Goodyear police apprehended Mr . Wilson after a short foot pursuit . He admitted to being in the trailer to steal clothes , and claimed some ash from his cigarette must have fallen and started the fire . He was ultimately booked into jail on the following charges:
Arson of a Structure: 13 - 1703 . A ( F4 )
Arson of an Occupied Structure: 13 - 1704A ( F2 )
Burglary: 13 - 1508 . A . ( F3 )
Criminal Damage: 13 - 1602 . A1 ( F5 )
The Police Department utilized multiple investigative measures , authored multiple search warrants , and conducted hours of surveillance in order to complete this investigation .
This conviction was a testament to the great teamwork between the police and fire departments and great investigative work by all involved .
