The end is in sight for an
ambitious multi - year project
to create a
wildfire fuel break
along Sausalito ' s western border with Highway 101 and the Marin Headlands .
The purpose of the fuel break is to slow the spread of wildfire , reduce wildfire intensity , improve access for firefighters , and extend the time for residents of hillside neighborhoods to evacuate .
To create the fuel break , crews from the
Southern Marin Fire Protection District
are removing non - native vegetation such as French broom , pruning the lower limbs of trees , thinning out brush , and removing dead vegetation . No healthy , mature , or scenic trees are being removed .
Segments of the fuel break on City - owned land and open space were completed in 2023 . The remainder of the project is expected to be finished by the end of 2024 and is being conducted in concert with the National Park Service , Caltrans , and property owners .
The recent rains have slowed progress , but work is expected to pick up again during the week of February 5 in the vicinity of
Olima Street
. Crews will then move in a southerly direction towards Alexander Avenue .
Any questions about the project can be directed to the Prevention Division of the Southern Marin Fire Protection District at prevention@smfd . org or ( 415 ) 380 - 1120 .
