Food and Drug Administration just gave the green light to Abrysvo , a new vaccine to protect pregnant people from respiratory syncytial virus ( RSV ) and lower respiratory tract disease ( LRTD ) in infants up to 6 months old . It ' s the first vaccine of its kind and can be given from 32 to 36 weeks of pregnancy . Abrysvo is a one - time injection into the muscle . In May , the FDA already approved it for individuals aged 60 and older . RSV is a super contagious virus that causes respiratory infections in people of all ages , especially infants . It ' s the top cause of infant hospitalization in the U . S . Abrysvo has been tested in ongoing studies and has shown to reduce the risk of severe LRTD by 81 . 8% within 90 days after birth , and 69 . 4% within 180 days after birth . In pregnant individuals between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy , it reduced the risk of LRTD by 34 . 7% and severe LRTD by 91 . 1% within 90 days after birth . This is a huge step in protecting our little ones from this dangerous disease!Abrysvo was found to significantly reduce the risk of LRTD in newborns compared to a placebo , with a reduction of 57 . 3% for LRTD and 76 . 5% for severe LRTD . The safety of Abrysvo was tested in two studies , one with around 3 , 600 pregnant individuals and the other with around 100 pregnant individuals . The most common side effects reported by pregnant individuals who received Abrysvo were pain at the injection site , headache , muscle pain , and nausea . Pre - eclampsia , a serious hypertension disorder , occurred in a small percentage of pregnant individuals who received Abrysvo . There were also slightly higher rates of low birth weight and jaundice in infants born to pregnant individuals who received Abrysvo . The prescribing information for Abrysvo includes a warning about a possible increased risk of preterm birth . The FDA has required further studies to assess the risks of preterm birth and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy . Abrysvo has been approved by the FDA and is manufactured by Pfizer Inc .
