Join us in celebrating Wiley and Dawn , two remarkable front desk staff members at the Louisville Recreation & Senior Center , whose quick thinking and compassion turned them into real - life heroes .
It was just another evening at the front desk , with patrons coming and going when something out of the ordinary caught the attention of Wiley and Dawn , who happened to be working the closing shift .
A patron named Terry had just finished his workout and was leaving the building . As he passed by the front desk , he stopped by to talk to Dawn and Wiley . Wiley noticed Terry was having difficulty speaking , and his speech was slurred , a subtle but concerning sign . Paying closer attention , Wiley and Dawn recognized the potential severity of the situation: a stroke in progress . Without missing a beat , they dialed 911 . Louisville EMS crews quickly arrived and activated a stroke alert while transporting him to AdventHealth Avista , where the ER team treated Terry in record time .
Their quick actions saved Terry ' s life . In recognition ,
AdventHealth Avista held a special ceremonyto reunite Terry with the Louisville Recreation & Senior Center staff and EMS crews and honor their life - saving actions .
"I just want to thank everybody that helped me . " expressed Terry . "Thank you so much . They told me I did miraculously well and it was because of these people here . They knew what to do , they thought quickly , they did it quickly , they got me to the hospital . I am so grateful to all of you . Thank you . "
This heartwarming incident was a powerful reminder of our part - time staff ' s vital role in ensuring our community ' s safety and well - being .
"Moments like these highlight the dedication and quick thinking of our staff . Their vigilance and compassion make a real difference in the lives of our patrons , " remarked Kathy Martin , Recreation & Senior Center Superintendent , reflecting on the incident .
The Recreation & Senior Center relies on over 100 indispensable part - time employees aged 15 to 85 , who bring diverse skills and experiences to roles like lifeguarding , guest relations , childcare , and fitness instruction . Without part - time employees , the center couldn ' t function at its current level . Their tireless efforts ensure smooth operations and maintain a vibrant , safe atmosphere for all patrons . We ' re deeply grateful for their commitment to serving our community .
So here ' s to the everyday heroes of the Louisville Recreation & Senior Center - the part - time staff whose dedication and commitment make our community a better , safer , and more welcoming place for all .
