The Education and Labor Departments of the U . S . announced today a bunch of new initiatives to expand Registered Apprenticeships for teachers and invest in teacher preparation programs . These efforts are part of the Department of Education ' s Raise the Bar: Lead the World initiative to improve learning conditions by addressing educator shortages . They also build on a joint letter sent by the Secretaries of Education and Labor last summer , urging state education and workforce leaders to take action . Today ' s announcement includes: new guidelines for Registered Apprenticeships for K - 12 teachers , funding from the Department of Education to support educator preparation programs , funding from the Department of Labor to develop and scale Registered Apprenticeship programs in critical sectors , the launch of a new industry intermediary to promote and expand Registered Apprenticeship programs for K - 12 educators , and a policy brief highlighting steps taken by states to support teacher recruitment , preparation , and retention . U . S . Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said that teacher apprenticeships are a key strategy in their plan to improve education and provide all students with great teachers . He mentioned that the Biden - Harris Administration has helped grow the number of states with Registered Apprenticeship programs for teachers and hopes that all 50 states will get onboard . Acting U . S . Secretary of Labor Julie Su stated that their investments will strengthen educator pipelines and create pathways to opportunity through Registered Apprenticeships . She emphasized the Biden - Harris Administration ' s approach to building a skilled and diverse workforce . The National Guidelines for K - 12 Teacher Registered Apprenticeships , developed by The Pathways Alliance and approved by the Department of Labor , are now available . These guidelines can help states , school districts , and other apprenticeship sponsors align their programs with high - quality standards for K - 12 teachers . They also provide a framework for developing state - specific program standards and expediting the approval of new apprenticeship programs . The Pathways Alliance NGS working group included a bunch of cool organizations like the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education , National Education Association , American Federation of Teachers , and more . The Department of Education also released a policy brief called "Raise the Bar: Eliminating Educator Shortages through Increased Compensation , High - Quality and Affordable Preparation and Teacher Leadership . " This brief highlights the steps that states are taking to support effective recruitment , preparation , and retention of teachers , as outlined by the Biden - Harris Administration . Due to the pandemic , there was a significant drop in education jobs , but we ' re slowly recovering . The Department of Education is also awarding over $27 million to support these efforts , including grants to improve educator preparation programs and funds to enhance the skills of educators . In addition , the Department of Labor has awarded over $65 million in grants to 45 states and territories to develop and expand registered apprenticeship programs in education and other sectors . The majority of these states and territories have identified the education sector as one of their priorities . The Department of Labor has also provided competitive grants to Kansas , Utah , North Dakota , Washington , and New Hampshire to support the expansion of Registered Apprenticeship Programs for K - 12 teachers , as well as other sectors . Furthermore , the Department of Labor is introducing a new Registered Apprenticeship industry intermediary , RTI International , which will focus on launching , promoting , and expanding Registered Apprenticeship programs in K - 12 education .
