The Deputy Fire Chief assists the Fire Chief in managing a progressive combination fire department. The Deputy Fire Chief responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents as a firefighter and may act as the Incident Commander and/or Emergency Manager. The position works to promote a positive culture while building a strong team atmosphere and promoting safety throughout the organization. This is an operational position, with a strong emphasis on planning, organizing, coordinating, monitoring, evaluating, and directing all facets of operations, administration, emergency management, and training of a multi-generational group while maintaining daily operational readiness. The Deputy Fire Chief is a high-level management position who must be able to conform to a rapidly changing and dynamic environment providing quality leadership. Minimum Required Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree focused in fire science/technology, public administration, business administration, public safety management, emergency management, emergency medicine, or a closely related field
.
Minimum of 3 years (full-time) or 7 years (part-time/volunteer) as a fire officer, acting fire officer, or other formal leadership position relevant to the Deputy Fire Chief position.
Licensed by the State of Minnesota or equivalent as a firefighter or meet the requirements to apply at the time of appointment.
Minnesota State (MSFCB) certified NFPA 1001 Firefighter II, NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I, NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I, and Hazardous Materials Operations.
Completed the following National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses: IS 100, IS 200, IS 700, and IS 800.
Minnesota State certified Emergency Medical Technician.
Valid Minnesota or equivalent driver’s license and good driving record.
