   Today , President Joseph R . Biden signed an Executive Order ( EO ) to make sure that Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) systems are safe , secure , and trustworthy . The U . S . Department of Commerce will play a key role in implementing the EO , using standards and evaluations along with reporting requirements and voluntary measures . Various agencies , including the National Institute of Standards and Technology ( NIST ) , will be responsible for achieving the EO ' s goals . NIST will work with both private and public stakeholders to develop guidelines , testing environments , and information resources that promote the safe and secure use of AI technologies .
