☷DOE Announces Leading Heat Pump Manufacturers Successfully Develop Next generation Prototypes to Withstand Subfreezing Weather

U.S. Department of Energy

The U . S . Department of Energy ( DOE ) has announced that four more heat pump manufacturers have successfully created prototypes as part of the Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump ( CCHP ) Technology Challenge . This initiative aims to speed up the adoption of heat pump technologies by supporting innovation and manufacturing . The goal is to develop cold - climate heat pumps that can save households over $500 a year on utility bills and reduce carbon emissions . The challenge requires prototypes to deliver full heating capacity without auxiliary heat and have higher efficiencies at 5 degrees Fahrenheit . By working with the industry , DOE aims to make efficient cold - climate electric heat pumps widely available , helping American families access clean heating and cooling options and aligning with President Biden ' s clean energy goals . The deployment of heat pumps is crucial in reducing carbon emissions and providing affordable clean energy options for Americans . Heat pumps use electricity to extract heat from the air for heating and cooling , reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50% compared to gas boilers . Bosch , Daikin , Midea , and Johnson Controls are joining the next phase of the Challenge , along with Lennox International , Carrier , Trane Technologies , and Rheem . They will be installing and monitoring over 23 prototypes in different cold - climate locations in the U . S . and Canada over the next year . With eight manufacturing partners successfully passing the laboratory testing stage , the DOE is now focusing on the original Challenge commitments to encourage the adoption of CCHPs . They will be working with partners to develop programs , incentives , and education campaigns to help consumers understand the benefits of these new designs . Electric heat pumps allow families and businesses to save on energy costs while supporting American manufacturing , improving public health , and addressing climate change . Additional savings are available through President Biden ' s Energy Efficient Tax Credit 25C for heat pumps . To learn more about savings and how heat pumps work , visit Pump Up Your Savings with Heat Pumps or DOE ' s Energy Savings Hub . The Residential CCHP Technology Challenge is part of the E3 Initiative led by DOE ' s Building Technologies Office , in partnership with the U . S . Environmental Protection Agency and Natural Resources Canada .
