   Trickling Filter Decommissioning – January 8th – January 31st , 2023
Construction of the Nelson Wastewater Treatment Facility continues .  The next key step is to remove three trickling filters on the northeast corner of the site .
The trickling filter technology is being removed because it cannot meet the future water quality requirements . Trickling filters have historically been a source of odor generation and will ultimately be replaced with a modern biological nutrient removal system .
Details about the activity are as follows:
The location of this infrastructure is highlighted in yellow in the figure below .
   Starting January 8
   th
, the team will be running diesel bypass pumping for five days to allow the treatment process to continue without the trickling filters .  Bypass pumping will need to run 24/7 during this time to continue to process water , however the bypass pumps will be enclosed to minimize noise .
   Starting January 23
   rd
, the trickling filters will be removed from service , with the activities lasting about a week .
During this period ( January 23
   rd
    - 31
   st
) , there is an increased potential for odor generation .  We will implement the same measures taken in removing the first filter to minimize the odor potential including the installation of chemical systems meant to prevent the odor from occurring and scheduling to minimize the duration of the activities .
Demolition of the trickling filters themselves will last through February , but the chances of odor are significantly reduced after the January period .
Dates noted may need to be adjusted to due weather or other factors .
As always , if you detect odors , please contact Johnson County Wastewater by filling out an
   Odor Complaint Form
. This form notifies Operations & Maintenance staff and top leadership directly .
Thank you for your understanding .  We will work to complete this task as quickly as possible while maintaining a safe work environment for our team and the community .
