The mission of San Juan County is to provide public services that are vital for the health, safety, and general well-being of our citizens. We strive to environmentally and culturally preserve the heritage of the individual islands that make up our beautiful county. Public programs are managed effectively and prudently to serve our residents. We recognize that county employees and volunteers are the foundation for providing these services. Therefore, government activities are thoughtfully conducted in a way that is ethical, fair, just, and impartial. San Juan County is tucked between Bellingham, WA and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Comprised entirely of islands, San Juan County is easily accessed via the Washington State Ferry system (from Anacortes WA), commercial air service, private boat, or plane. San Juan County represents the best of the Pacific Northwest with meandering meadows, magnificent shorelines, accessible trails, and spectacular water views. The San Juan Islands lie in the Olympic Mountains "rain shadow" and enjoy an average of nearly 250 days of sunshine and about half the rainfall as Seattle. The islands have a temperate climate year round with average high temperatures rarely exceeding 75 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and about 45 degrees in the winter. As an employer, San Juan County offers competitive wages, generous vacation schedules, thirteen paid holidays that include two personal holidays, and a substantial government retirement system.
