Burlington County Commissioner Felicia Hopson pledged County government would continue to support Burlington County residents in multiple ways on Thursday after she was selected to remain the board’s director for the new year .
Hopson was installed as the board’s director during its 2024 Organization Meeting at the Olde Historic Courthouse in Mount Holly .
The meeting featured the oaths of office for Commissioners Tom Pullion and Balvir Singh to new three - year terms , along with the swearing - in of Joanne Schwartz to a new term as Burlington County Clerk . Commissioner Dan O’Connell was also installed as the board’s deputy director for 2024 .
During the meeting , Hopson outlined several of the County’s achievements from the past year , along with the Board’s vision and goals for the new year .
“It’s widely known that Burlington County is the most affordable county in the region . We have incredible history , culture and arts , and premier downtown business districts . Our County has diverse communities that embrace all races , nationalities and backgrounds . We make a difference in the lives of our residents through our vital services and programs , and the support we provide to our communities and businesses , ” Hopson said during the director’s address . “We care about our residents and our communities , and our goal for 2024 is to remain on the same course: To continue making a difference in the lives of every Burlington County resident . ”
Hopson is only the second Black women to serve as the leader of the Commissioners . In addition to her director duties , she will remain board liaison to the Department of Human Services , the Burlington County Bridge Commission and the Department of Economic Development .
Commissioner O’Connell , who was board director in 2022 , will serve as the board’s deputy director this year . He will remain liaison to the Health Department and elections and schools .
Commissioner Pullion remains liaison to the Department of Public Works , the Department of Solid Waste and Recycling and the Burlington County Library System . Commissioner Allison Eckel also continues as liaison to the Department of Resource Conservation , Public Safety and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office , and Commissioner Singh continues as liaison to the Department of Corrections , Burlington County Courts and Burlington County Medical Examiner’s Office .
Burlington County Administrator Eve Cullinan was also reappointed to a five - year term .
Among the Commissioners’ plans for 2024 are the return of the winter and summer editions of Burlington County Restaurant Week . Last year , more than 125 businesses participated , including at least one restaurant from each of Burlington County’s 40 towns .
Hopson also said the County planned to continue to partner with the Burlington County Bridge Commission to hold regular small business workshops and seminars .
New initiatives coming soon include the launch of the launch of the Burlington County Military and Veteran - owned Business Grant Program , which is expected to begin accepting applications later this month , and a new grant program to aid local food pantries .
Hopson , who has served on the Board of Commissioners since 2019 , said the County continues planning for the creation of Burlington County’s first emergency shelter .
“There’s no question an emergency shelter is needed , ” Hopson said . “We must take this step to provide a safe , clean refuge , along with a clear pathway to services that can assist our most vulnerable . ”
“This is what good government is all about: Working together to serve the public and find solutions to their problems and needs , ” Hopson added . “We are making sure Burlington County is a place residents can be proud of and an example of what an inclusive community looks like . This isn’t always easy , but by staying united and working cooperatively , there’s no challenge we can’t overcome . ”
