Today we honor and remember the legacy and dream of civil rights icon , Reverend Martin Luther King Jr . He would have turned 95 today . Louisville had complicated and changing feelings about Dr . Martin Luther King Jr . over the decades .
While it is impossible to know how families talked about the Civil Rights movement in their own homes , we do know that the Louisville Times questioned whether he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965 , and then immediately following , decried violence against peaceful black Americans attempting to register to vote with his support . This is likely referring to Dr . Martin Luther King Jr . visiting Selma in January 1965 and the violence that ended up inspiring the Selma to Montgomery marches and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 .

Yet after he was assassinated , the Louisville Times printed these passionate quotes from Ted Kennedy in Denver , and ended with this powerful plea: “What are you and I doing today to better understand ourselves , our friends; bur neighbors , “the other person”? At what point have we allowed viciousness and violence as a means of communicating with our fellow man to replace understanding , compassion and good will? We must turn to ourselves . . . that is all that is left . . . no other person or factor can share the blame . When are we going to start being honest with ourselves?”
Dr . Martin Luther King Jr . Day was recognized as a federal holiday in 1983 , and as a state holiday in Colorado in 1984 . However it wasn’t until after Louisville councilwoman Margaret Hornbostel introduced a measure to have the City officially recognize the observance of Martin Luther King Jr . Day in 1992 that Louisville recognized it as a City holiday . Also in the 1990s , Louisville began holding interfaith commemorations that brought Catholic , Protestant , Jewish , Baha’i and Sikh neighbors together to celebrate and remember the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr . These were hosted by Louisville churches like Christ the Servant Lutheran Church and the St . Louis Catholic Church .
