The City of Weslaco broke ground on a new RDF or drainage pond that will hold excess storm waters during extreme weather events . The Cleckler Heald RDF at B Garza Middle School will hold over 75 - acre feet of water and remove approximately 200 homes from the 10 - year floodplain . Rhiner Construction will be the contractor for the project . The total price for the project is $2 . 7 million , as part of the drainage pond fund . Mayor Adrian Gonzalez stated that drainage will continue to be a priority for his administration . The city thanked Cruz Hogan and Associates for developing plans for this drainage improvement , Hidalgo County Drainage District 1 , Hidalgo Cameron County Irrigation District #9 , the Texas Water Development Board , and WISD for partnering with the city of Weslaco and allowing this RDF to be built on their property for the benefit for the entire community . The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024 .
