Year End Review
In my City Manager ' s report during the last Board of Commissioners meeting , I provided a year - end review to summarize the actions taken this year related to each of the Board ' s established priorities ( public safety , Parks and Recreation improvements , road maintenance , economic development , and enhance city planning ) .
The full report can be viewed on the
recorded videoof the meeting , but here is a general overview of what was discussed:
For public safety , City Staff and Officials accomplished many meetings with Shelby County Sheriff ' s (
SCSO
) office leadership , entered into agreements for the purchase of a potential
SCSOfacility and SCSO addressed many resident concerns .
Parks and Recreation improvements included the development of the partnership with the YMCA for the future Lakeland Community Center , condemnation and acquisition and demolition of the Econolodge ( and parking lot ) , phase II design continued for the Lakeland athletic complex , approval of funding for the installation of field lighting at the athletic complex and discussions with a performing arts company regarding a potential location in Lakeland .
Road maintenance included paving project funding allocated in the fiscal year 2024 budget ( $1 . 7 million ) , New Canada Road construction documents completed ( awaiting State of Tennessee additional grant funds ) , "Old" Canada Road paving grant awarded and fiscal year 2023 paving completed in Evergreen Manor , Bentbrooke Hills and Salem Road .
Economic development focused on the approval of a TIF district established in February by the Industrial Development Board , Board of Commissioners and the Shelby County Commission , agreement of purchase of the Relax Inn ( to close in March of 2024 ) and an agreement for the purchase of the Belz property on Beverle Rivera ( which is expected to close this week ) .
Enhancing city planning involved PULSE Plan meetings and subcommittees throughout the year ( plan for approval early 2024 ) . Additionally , the land development regulations update was started and is currently underway ( multiple mid - year Code amendments were also approved via Ordinance ) .
There are numerous 2023 accomplishments to be proud of and it was a rewarding moment to be able to reflect on all the hard work from both City staff and Board members who have come together to
Get Things Donefor our flourishing city . I have high hopes for 2024 as we embark on new improvements and existing projects!
