Excellent opportunity for a full time Building Official to perform skilled inspection work to insure compliance with municipal ordinances and regulations governing construction to buildings, housing, and infrastructure, and effective compliance with legally established specifications and requirements. This position reports to the Planning and Development Director.
Job responsibilities include:
Checks routine plans and specifications for new building construction, alterations and repairs to see that work complies with ordinances and regulations.
Inspects buildings, drive approaches, and similar structures that are being constructed, altered, moved or demolished to see that work complies with the provisions of applicable building and related codes and the zoning ordinance.
Determines that buildings and structures are constructed in a safe manner in accordance with approved plans and specifications.
Inspects quality of materials and methods of construction for footings, foundations, excavations, wood framing, concrete work, steel erection, lathing, plastering, tile work, masonry, plumbing, electrical installations, and other construction work.
Furnishes information to the public and construction regarding the requirements of building codes and the zoning ordinances.
Requires corrections be made when deficiencies exist and may assist builders/owners in determining how corrections are to be made to ensure conformance.
Reviews assigned geographic area to detect construction without permit.
Maintains complete records of permits applied for and issued and work performed.
May recommend condemnation when building construction is found to be dangerous, unsafe or defective.
Makes routine and final inspections of new and existing wiring and electrical installations for conformance with safety standards, laws and ordinances.
Signs authorization for electrical service connections.
Makes fire and occupancy inspections of commercial users to insure that electrical work is installed efficiently. Notifies responsible parties of violations and coordinates unsafe conditions with fire department.
Checks and calibrates electrical test equipment used in inspections.
Investigates complaints of dangerous wiring and orders corrections.
Inspects electrical systems following fires and other catastrophic incidents to determine work required to restore systems to safe operating conditions.
Checks routine plans and specifications for plumbing and heating installation and modification to see that work complies with ordinances and regulations.
Makes routine and final inspections of new and existing plumbing and heating installations for conformance with safety standards laws and ordinances.
Performs inspections during specific states of construction to detect code violations.
Advises plumbers, contractors and others regarding plumbing and heating regulations.
May recommend condemnation when plumbing or heating installations are found to be dangerous, unsafe or defective.
Oversees verification of trades having proper credentials and endorsements for work proposed.
Performs customer service inspections to confirm proper plumbing and no cross connections.
Essential leader of the backflow prevention program as required by the State.
Ensures compliance with stormwater pollution prevention plan requirements at construction and development sites and assists with MS4 program reporting.
Essential member in the administration of the flood hazard prevention program.
Assists with the administration of the City's Fats, Oils, and Greases (FOG) program.
Essential contributor to determining the City's ISO ratings.
