So , two brothers from Indianapolis , Jacob Tomlin ( 28 ) and Ryan White ( 21 ) , got busted for illegally selling guns that they bought under false pretenses . Tomlin got off easy with just two years of probation after admitting to lying on paperwork when buying guns for his younger brother , who was too young to purchase them legally . White , on the other hand , got sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for dealing guns without a license . The Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms and Explosives ( ATF ) started investigating the source of guns found at crime scenes in Indy and Chicago and traced them back to Tomlin . He bought 15 handguns for his bro , who then sold some of them for a profit . This kind of thing is called "straw purchasing" and it helps put guns in the hands of criminals who should never have them . The U . S . Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana , Zachary A . Myers , said this kind of gun trafficking fuels violence on our streets , and they ' re working hard to stop it . The case was part of a larger effort by the U . S . Department of Justice ' s Chicago Gun Trafficking Strike Force . So , on July 22nd this year , the Department of Justice was like "let ' s do something about gun violence" and launched five strike forces . These teams are gonna work together to stop the illegal trafficking of guns in important areas throughout the US . Basically , they wanna cut off the flow of guns from where they ' re coming from to five big markets: New York , Chicago , LA , San Fran/Sacramento , and DC ( oh , and also Columbus ) .
