The Department of Education in the US just announced the launch of two grant programs to help improve research infrastructure in Historically Black Colleges and Universities ( HBCUs ) , Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities ( TCCUs ) , and Minority - Serving Institutions ( MSIs ) . The goal is to increase completion and retention rates for underserved students . These grants will provide nearly $100 million for infrastructure investments and evidence - based strategies to support these students . This funding is part of President Biden ' s commitment to invest in HBCUs , MSIs , and TCCUs , with over $25 billion already allocated . U . S . Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona emphasized the importance of investing in diverse and inclusive institutions to help students succeed . The grant programs aim to expand research and innovation capacity and provide support for underserved students to complete their degrees and achieve their goals . The funding will also help institutions move towards higher research classifications . Hey , TCCUs that have their own Carnegie Classification designation and can ' t be classified as R1 , R2 , or D/PU will get funds to support more research activities , undergraduate research opportunities , faculty development , research development , and infrastructure . This includes physical infrastructure and human capital development . The Postsecondary Student Success Grant ( PSSG ) application is now open to institutions that want to support underserved students . The goal of the PSSG grant is to improve postsecondary student outcomes , like retention , transfer , credit accumulation , and completion , in a fair way . They want to use data and evidence - based activities to help leaders make better decisions and take action for inclusive student success . There are still barriers for students of color and low incomes , and as more non - traditional students go to college , we need different support to help them finish their degrees . The grant program will provide $45 million to fund strategies that have been proven to help underserved students succeed . There are two tiers of the competition based on how much research has validated their effectiveness . You can find more information on how to apply for the PSSG grant here .
