The Aquatic Instructor/Guard provides maintenance in the entire aquatic area, performs first aid on patrons or staff, instructs swimming lessons or advanced aquatic programming, and provides lifeguard supervision to the public. The Aquatic Instructor/Guard may provide shift supervision and executes the water chemistry program to ensure safety and cleanliness. The Aquatic Instructor/Guard works closely with and under the direction of the Head Guard and Aquatic Supervisor.
WORK PERFORMED
Maintenance/Shift Supervisor Requirements
Cleans the aquatic area, change room and staff room.
Works in accordance with WHMIS, Municipal Health and Safety and safe work practices. Completes daily, weekly and monthly maintenance.
All incidents, first aid and work orders etc. are attended to and reported with proper documentation to the Aquatic Supervisor via the Head Guard or designate.
Communicates with Head Guard (or designate) or Aquatic Supervisor on matters pertinent to their shift.
In the absence of the Aquatic Supervisor or Head Guard (or designate) may be responsible for the evacuation of the building during an emergency, call in replacement staff, evict unruly patrons and follow established policy and procedures while doing so (level 4 only).
First Aid
Provides first aid for patrons and other staff.
Must maintain minimum requirements and stay current on skills and knowledge.
Completes all appropriate documentation for first aid and incident reporting before leaving shift.
Swimming Fitness / Instruction
Provides swimming lessons.
Conducts and develops lesson plans for swimming instruction.
Instructors evaluate students’ performance and maintain records of performance and attendance.
Provides screening for patrons unsure of their water safety level.
Provides fitness instruction or advanced aquatic programming when qualified.
Lifeguarding
Promotes a positive perspective/relationship between the public and The Town of Hinton. Provides lifeguarding at the level of National Lifeguard Certification Maintains a safe and enjoyable environment for patrons.
Maintains fitness level and current certifications at all times.
Must be able to perform all skills of National Lifeguard Certification at all times.
Interacts with the public in a positive way to educate patrons in safety issues and models appropriate behaviour in a pool environment.
Handles complaints and suggestions in a positive manner.
Attends and participates in in-services.
Maintains confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the aquatic facility.
Ensures adequate guarding is in place at all times as per LSS and facility guidelines/procedures.
Chemistry / Operations
Works with the Head guard to appropriately adjust water chemistry to ensure public safety at all times.
Follows water program in a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly plan as set up by the Head Guard and the Aquatic Supervisor.
This includes but is not limited to overflows, backwashes on the sand filters, basin dumps, vacuuming, cleaning cells and traps or related activities up to and including working a shutdown Records accurate documentation of water tests and chemical adjustments.
Records chemical and janitorial inventory.
Maintains confidentiality in matters pertinent to water chemistry, records and reports.
Other Duties
Ensure public compliance with facility safety procedures and deal with patrons’ questions and concerns regarding swimming lessons and pool schedules.
Performs other duties as necessary.
