Advanced EMT
Department: Emergency Medical Services
Reports to: EMS Director
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
This position meets all the requirements set forth by the Kansas Board of EMS for the position of Advanced EMT. The Advanced EMT is expected to meet the urgent health care needs of all patients regardless of age or co-morbidity, consistent with their defined scope of practice. The Advanced EMT must be able to exercise considerable judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills. The Advanced EMT provides out-of-hospital medical care to those with urgent needs and is a component of the overall healthcare system. The Advanced EMT delivers care as part of a system intended to decrease the morbidity associated with sudden illness and injury. Work is performed with a substantial degree of independence within the framework of prescribed policies and procedures and under the direct supervision of the Shift Captain and general supervision of the EMS Director.
Essential Functions
Performs all the authorized activities of an Advanced EMT as described in K.S.A. 65-6120 and amendments thereto.
Determines appropriate facility to which patient will be transported, report nature and extent of injuries or illness to that facility, ask for direction from hospital physician or emergency department;
Observes patient en-route and administers care as directed by physician or emergency department standing orders;
Identifies diagnostic signs that require communication with facility;
Assists in removing patient from ambulance and into emergency facility;
Reports verbally and in writing observations about care of patient at the scene and en-route to facility, provide assistance to emergency staff as required;
Maintains all emergency vehicles and equipment in a state of readiness at all times, ensures the cleanliness and readiness of vehicles, equipment and facilities;
Attends departmental training sessions;
Maintains appropriate records and reports;
Provides mutual aid service to other county departments as well as other jurisdictions;
Operates radio and other communication equipment;
Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the facilities and equipment; cleans the offices, classrooms, bathroom, emergency vehicles and equipment, ambulance bays and storage areas as needed; utilizes proper decontaminating procedures as indicated; cares for grounds around station; make minor repairs, washes, hangs and dries clothing and items;
Operates office machines, such as photocopiers and scanners, facsimile machines, voice mail systems, and personal computers.
Secondary Functions
Attends meetings and trainings, as required;
Performs other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.
Supervisory Functions
Assists with the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of department or function;
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
Knowledge
Knowledge awareness of applicable emergency medical services techniques, policies, procedures, codes and laws; stays abreast of HCFA/Medicare/Medicaid changes and requirements;
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and municipal laws, rules, regulations, codes and/or statutes, processes and procedures, e.g., HIPAA, COBRA and ADA;
Knowledge of applicable departmental policies, procedures and regulations;
Knowledge of principles and procedures for providing internal and external customer service; this includes assessing the needs of both to meet quality standards for services and to provide high levels of customer satisfaction;
Knowledge of office record keeping methods, practices and techniques;
Knowledge of chemicals and hazardous materials;
Knowledge of use and operation of emergency equipment;
Knowledge of medications.
Skills
Prioritizing work assignments and projects as well as establishing standards to use and implement;
Good oral and written communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
Abilities

Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations;
Ability to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays;
Ability to meet physical demands worksheet requirements.
Ability to write clearly and informatively; edit work for spelling and grammar; vary writing style to meet needs; present numerical data effectively, and read and interpret written information;
Ability to operate a computer, tablet, copier, fax machine, and related office equipment.
Required Education and/or Experience
High school education or G.E.D.
Preferred Education and/or Experience
Associate’s degree.
Required Certifications, Licenses & Requirements
Valid Advanced EMT certification by the Kansas Board of EMS or the ability to obtain.
Valid Driver’s License.
Without record of suspension or revocation in any state.
Attain and maintain valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS);
May be required to attain and maintain other certifications as related to position or for specialized areas of assignment
Working and Physical Conditions
Frequent high mental, visual and auditory concentration is required;
General indoor and outdoor working environment;
The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions regularly; wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold and/or heat; risk of electrical shock and explosives;
This position should expect occasional times of high stress;
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, it can increase to loud and chaotic;
The employee may be exposed to dangerous situations;
The employee may be exposed to bodily fluids;
Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up, push or pull up to 50 pounds; push or pull up to 100 pounds without assistance and up to 200 pounds or more with assistance;
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear;
The employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl;
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
