, organic materials like food scraps , yard trimmings , paper , and cardboard make up half of what Californians send to landfill . Anaerobic decomposition of organic waste in landfill emits 20% of the state ' s methane , a
climate super pollutant
84 times more potent than carbon dioxide .
Through Senate Bill ( SB ) 1383 , the State of California is seeking to achieve a 75% reduction in landfilled organic waste by 2025 compared to 2014 levels .
You can do your part and stay on the right side of the law by making full use of the green bin provided to your residence by the City of Sausalito and its waste services provider ,

Most people know that grass clippings , leaves , banana peels , and coffee grounds all go in the green bin , but here are a few things you may not have known about:
Wine corks . Organic wine corks are compostable . Plastic corks should go in your gray bin for landfill .
Bones . Bones of all kinds are compostable , as is shell waste from shellfish like lobsters , shrimp , and oysters .
Chopsticks and toothpicks . Chopsticks , toothpicks , and other uncoated and untreated wood products ( even lumber! ) can go in the green bin .
Ice cream cartons . Food - soiled paper containers like ice cream cartons , coffee cups , pizza boxes , and paper plates can go in the green bin . If you see fibers when you tear the paper , you know it ' s compostable .
Paper towels . If a paper towel has been used to clean up food or drink messes , it can be composted .
Please don ' t place these materials in your green waste cart: bamboo , dirt , rocks , sand , lawn sod , diapers , pet waste , treated or painted wood , ash , plastic - lined drink and soup boxes , foil - backed paper , and clothing .
Under SB 1383 , businesses will also be doing their part to reduce green waste by redirecting unused food items to food banks , soup kitchens , and non - profit organizations . This requirement is already in effect for grocery stores and other large - scale food vendors/providers and will go into effect in 2024 for restaurants , hotels , hospitals , and schools .
