The City of Charlottetown Emergency Measures team and EMO partners continue to monitor Hurricane Fiona ' s potential impacts , and will continue to keep residents informed . Staff and emergency personnel are responding as they are able , and crews are working to finalize the Reception Centres for members of the public who cannot stay inside their homes .
At this time , we are advising residents not to proceed to Reception Centres until it is deemed safe to do so . A further announcement will be made in the coming hours about the loca......tion of the Reception Centres .
From tonight until possibly Sunday , stay inside unless it is absolutely necessary , stay off the roads , and expect continuing power outages .
There are several downed trees and fallen power lines throughout the City , blocking several streets . Power outages are affecting a majority of residents . Our dispatch Centre received over a hundred calls overnight regarding downed trees and power lines . There were 26 calls to the Charlottetown Fire Department since 9 p . m . on Friday evening , and emergency personnel are triaging calls . Please note that , at this time , calls regarding public safety will be prioritized over calls regarding property damage .
Crews are doing what they can , but the majority of the cleanup work will begin once wind speeds decrease from the extreme levels we are currently experiencing .
Any announcements regarding the City of Charlottetown ' s operations , including the location of Reception Centres once they are opened , will be made through the City ' s social media pages ( Twitter: @ChtownPE and Facebook: @CityofCharlottetown ) , on the City ' s website at charlottetown . ca/news and through local media .
To report a clogged catch basin , a large downed tree/branch blocking a public right of way , or issues with City infrastructure , contact Public Works at 902 - 894 - 5208 during regular business hours ( after business hours , contact: 902 - 629 - 6916 ) . All other emergencies should be directed to 911 . For a complete list of departmental contacts ( during and after business hours ) , visit charlottetown . ca/contact_us .
Citizens are responsible for ensuring they can receive updates from emergency personnel , utility crews and the municipality in an emergency . The public is encouraged to have a device that can receive updates without an electricity source , such as a battery or hand crank - powered radio .
The public is also encouraged to sign - up for emergency alerts through the free Charlottetown Alert System . The public can receive emergency alerts via SMS ( text message ) , email or phone .
