   Truck Driver/Laborer

   Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM (Winter Hours); Monday – Thursday, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM (Summer Hours)

   Incumbent serves as Truck Driver/Laborer for the Highway Department, responsible for operating various trucks, tools and equipment in clearing and maintaining county roads and  right-of-ways.
   DUTIES:
   Sets up and operates various trucks and equipment in clearing and maintaining county roads and right-of-ways, such as dump truck, snow plow, chain saw, chipper, front-end loader, compaction roller, grader, jack hammer, riding mower and street sweeper.  Operates trucks to pull trailers, remove snow, haul and apply various materials, such as stone, asphalt, dirt, salt and sand.  May operate various heavy equipment, as assigned.
   Clears and maintains County drains/ditches and bridges, including lifting, loading/unloading, installing, repairing and/or cleaning drainage pipes, culverts, catch basins, tiles, bridges, headers and guard rails using various equipment and tools, such as concrete tools, drills, hammers, power saws, cutting torch and wrenches.
   Installs/removes permanent and emergency road signs, and installs pavement and railroad crossing markers.  Shovels and spreads road patching materials, and picks up trash, debris and dead animals.
   Maintains daily work records as required, such as location, work performed, mileage, and materials used.  Receives/transmits information by two-way radio from/to Foreman and office.
   Performs preventive maintenance on trucks and equipment, such as washing, maintaining fluid levels and lubricating, and records on maintenance log as required.
   Periodically performs traffic control/flagging at work sites, including directing traffic and setting signs, warning markers, barricades and cones.
   Serves on 24-hour call as needed.
   Performs related duties as assigned.
    
   SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
   High school diploma or GED.
   Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures and ability to properly operate a variety of heavy equipment, trucks, hand and power tools,  including dump truck, snow plow, power saws, chipper, front-end loader, compaction roller, jack hammer, street sweeper, grader, riding mower, shovels, hammers, screw drivers, wrenches and drills.
   Ability to physically perform assigned duties, including driving/sitting for long periods, close and far  vision, hearing sounds/communication, standing/walking for long periods, depth perception, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds,  reaching, bending, color and depth perception, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.
   Ability to work with others in a team environment with moderate supervision.
   Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and maintain required work records.
   Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with in person and by two-way radio with co-workers and occasionally the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
   Ability to occasionally work extended, weekend and/or evening hours.
   Ability to serve on 24-hour call and respond swiftly, rationally and decisively to emergency situations.
   Possession of a valid Indiana Commercial Driver’s License and required endorsements and demonstrated safe driving record.  
   RESPONSIBILITY:
   Incumbent performs moderately complex tasks according to Department policies, procedures and safety requirements, referring to supervisor unusual situations.  Incumbent’s duties require some care and skill to protect tools and equipment and prevent injury to self and others.
   PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
   Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers for purposes of exchanging information. Incumbent reports directly to Foreman.
   PHYSICAL EFFORT:
   Incumbent’s duties may involve continuous physical exertion, such as driving/sitting and/or standing/walking for long periods, close and far vision, hearing  sounds/communication, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying object weighing more than 50 pounds, reaching, bending,  and handling/grasping/fingering objects.
   WORKING CONDITIONS:
   Incumbent performs a majority of duties in a vehicle, on heavy equipment or outdoors and is frequently exposed to normal hazards associated with maintaining roads and right-of-ways, such as machinery, traffic, noise, grease, dirt, dust, vehicle fumes, extreme temperatures and inclement weather.  In responding to emergency situations, incumbent may be exposed to such hazards as downed power lines and/or fallen limbs/trees.  Safety precautions must be followed at all times to prevent injury to self and others.
    
   Incumbent occasionally works extended, evening and/or weekend hours and serves on 24-hour call for emergency situations.
