   Avondale Drive Electric Project honored with Award of Distinction
    
   The City of Avondale received an Environmental Excellence Award of Distinction from 
   Arizona Forward
    for its Avondale Drive Electric project .
    
   The project received the award Saturday , March 19 in the category of Environmental Education and Communication and was also a recognized finalist in Climate Action Solutions .
    
   The Drive Electric project encourages widespread adoption of electric vehicles ( EV ) by increasing access to EV charging stations and raising awareness about the benefits of driving electric . The City recognizes EVs as a key tool for improving air quality , unlocking clean transportation innovation and spurring sustainable economic growth .
    
   The Drive Electric project’s success is marked by a 31% increase in EV ownership in Avondale between January 2020 and January 2021 .
    
   Project efforts included City Council’s adoption of forward - thinking EV charging standards ,  an inaugural Drive Electric campaign kicked off by Mayor Kenn Weise and installation of public EV chargers at Avondale Civic Center Library . The City also partnered with Phoenix Electric Auto Association and Arizona Public Service ( APS ) to host some of the first EV car show and ride and drive events in the West Valley .  These events gave residents an opportunity to learn about and test drive electric vehicles for free .
    
   “Electric vehicles are rapidly gaining popularity because they are fun to drive , cost less to maintain and fuel , have lower environmental impacts and more new and used options are becoming available , ” said Danae Presler , Avondale Sustainability Officer . “Cities can make it easier to go electric by improving access to charging stations and providing opportunities to learn more about the technology . ”
    
   In addition to its own initiatives , the City is an active partner in shaping Arizona’s Statewide Transportation Electrification Plan and works closely with its utility partners , Salt River Project and Arizona Public Service , to enable widespread adoption of electric vehicles . A City representative also co - chairs the Electric Vehicle Subgroup of the Sustainable Cities Network .
