Salary:
$58,000 - $75,000 This position offers a competitive salary that is negotiable and commensurate with experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plans, coordinates, directs and supervises the operations and staff of the department.
Plans, organizes, directs and administers the activities of the department.
Interviews and selects new employees; provides training and instruction; plans, coordinates, assigns and reviews work; evaluates performance; acts on problems and concerns.
Plans, organizes, promotes and directs, through subordinate supervisors, comprehensive parks and recreational programs for all age groups.
Promote and support diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and park program offerings.
Implement and evaluate policies and procedures, suggesting changes in current practices when necessary.
Carries out duties in accordance with the policies established by the Board of Commissioners and the Porter County Board of Parks and Recreation.
Oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive master plan that provides measurable social and economic benefits to the community and contributes to the quality of life of Porter County residents.
Directs studies to assess current operations and determine future needs including the adequacy of land, facilities, and programming reach.
Develops department operating and capital improvement budgets and monitors expenditures.
Evaluates community needs and directs the planning and implementation methods proposed by staff members.
Coordinate acquisition, design, planning, enhancement and maintenance of recreation facilities.
Evaluate all programs, services, and facilities to determine if goals and objectives are being met.
Seek opportunities for revenue enhancement through efficient operations, service user fees, fundraising, grants, and sponsorships.
Function as a liaison between the County Commissioners, County Council, the Parks and Recreation Board, other Porter County Departments, and the Porter County Parks Foundation.
Initiate contact with public and private organizations and officials to promote the use of parks, facilities, and programs.
Make presentations to business and community groups.
Work cooperatively with surrounding municipalities to explore partnership opportunities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications for the Position
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Parks & Recreation Superintendent. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of five years of increasingly responsible supervisory experience in the delivery of parks and recreation services, and a Bachelor's degree with major course work in parks, recreation, public administration, or related field.
