The Springfield Gas Department will begin its annual leak survey on Thursday , April 18 , 2022 .  
   The Springfield Gas Department will be conducting a quality control survey of the natural gas system to ensure public safety and the proper operation of the gas lines and meters . Gas mains and business districts are surveyed annually and customer services are surveyed once every five years . This is part of a routine safety practice required by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration ( PHMSA ) .  
   A typical leak survey is performed by a technician who uses a leak - detecting device and walks or drives over the gas main located in the street or alley , then to your gas meter . The technician will require access to a portion of your yard , depending on the distance and location of the service line and meter . A typical survey does not require digging and generally lasts a few minutes .  
   The Springfield Gas Department has contracted with Mid - South to complete the survey and meter inspection . Vehicles operated by Mid - South will have signs on the vehicle identifying the company . City personnel and contractors will have identification with them .    It is anticipated this work will be completed by May 16 , 2022 , pending any weather delays .
