The Newport Beach Police Department , Animal Control and local Fish and Wildlife officers are working to confirm a possible mountain lion sighting reported Friday , May 20 in the Port Streets neighborhood , around the 1900 block of Port Cardigan Place .
The agencies have deployed personnel in the area to attempt to locate the mountain lion and are using drones to search the area . The location of the sighting is near Anderson Elementary school , where officials have been notified and are taking appropriate action to ensure student safety .
The presence of a mountain lion or other wildlife in this area may be attributed to the recent Laguna Beach Coastal Fire , which displaced wildlife from their natural habitat .
Residents in the area are advised to take precautions and keep animals and small children indoors .
The Mountain Lion Foundation ( mountainlion . org ) advises the following safety actions in the event of mountain lion sighting:
Make yourself seem as large as possible by standing tall and waving arms above your head
Act defiant , not afraid
Slowly create distance
If you see a mountain lion or other dangerous wildlife , please report it to the Newport Beach Police Department at 949 - 644 - 3731 or in the event of an emergency , call 9 - 1 - 1 .
