The South Kingstown Police Department is seeking candidates to establish an eligibility list for the role of Civilian Police Dispatcher.  There is currently one part time position available.  The South Kingstown Police Department serves a diverse 63 square mile community, home to over 30,000 residents.  South Kingstown consists of rural and suburban areas, 10 miles of coastline, and a number of unique and distinct villages.   South Kingstown is geographically the largest community in the State, is the most populated community in Washington County, and is home to the University of Rhode Island and South County Hospital.   The South Kingstown Police Department is fortunate to have strong local partners in public safety, with a municipally run Paramedic-level Emergency Medical Services Department and two strong volunteer fire departments.
    
   Dispatchers are responsible for the handling of routine and emergency public assistance calls for police, fire, and emergency medical services.  Dispatchers are also responsible for handling in-station requests from members of the public.  This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and a minimum of 1 year experience in a public safety dispatch or law enforcement setting and experience using IMC Public Safety software is preferred.  This position requires successful completion of a thorough background check.  This position is considered essential, is subject to being held or called back, and must be available for all shifts, and during storms, weather, and other emergency events.  Applicants must possess demonstrated dependability; excellent verbal and written communication skills; and strong computer, data entry, and database management skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.  Applicants must possess a demonstrated ability to remain calm in stressful and emergency situations; multi-task and function well under pressure and in a fast paced environment; and maintain a high degree of maturity, strict confidentiality, and exercise discretion in the handling of sensitive and confidential information.  Applicants must possess a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with fellow employees, the public, and others in a courteous manner; and deal tactfully, respectfully, and effectively with the public in both routine and crisis situations.
    
   This 40 hour per week position affiliated with Council 94 starts at a rate of $23.08 per hour, and upon successful completion of the six month probationary period, increases to $23.66 per hour, and includes a full range of benefits.  To apply, please submit your required cover letter, resume, and application to

   Following a review of application materials, selected candidates will be contacted and invited to participate in the next step of the recruitment process, an exam.  The selected candidates will receive instructions by email that will serve as your invitation to enter the exam.  You must bring the instructions to the exam, along with a government issued photo ID, and a non-refundable twenty-five dollar processing fee (check or money order payable to ‘Town of South Kingstown’).  Failure to appear for the exam will disqualify you from the process.   The Chief of Police may waive the fee, under a hardship waiver, upon written request in advance of the exam date.
