We (the City of Wetaskiwin) are seeking both Parks and Transportation Summer Students to support our Public Works teams during the spring/summer season (April-August).
Reporting to the Parks Supervisor, this position is responsible for the beauty and maintenance of floral areas, parks, open spaces, cemeteries, playgrounds, and downtown streetscapes. Ensuring the cleanliness of our community while addressing maintenance and minor repairs of our parks and open spaces.
·Reporting to the Transportation Lead this position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all City roadways, drainage systems, sidewalks, and signs.

Responsibilities:
Parks:
Provide excellent customer service.
Clean and carry out minor repairs to tools, equipment, buildings and contents.
Maintain outdoor sidewalks and pathways.
Assist in cemetery lawn maintenance and general clean up.
Assist in pruning.
Weed, water, fertilize, seed, install turf, and other maintenance,
Operate equipment such as self-propelled and/or self-riding lawn mowers.
Work outdoors and on feet for extended periods.
Lift and move medium weight objects 10 to 30 pounds and on occasion up to 45 pounds.
Additional duties and special projects as required.
Transportation:
Provide excellent customer service.
Repair roadways, curbs, and sidewalks.
Cleaning and maintenance of storm drainage network.
Clean and complete minor repairs to machinery and equipment.
Operate small equipment.
Complete storm drainage cleaning & maintenance.
Ensures public safety while flagging or performing other duties around traffic and work sites.
Additional duties and special projects as required.
Education and Qualifications
16-30 years of age.
Holds a current valid Alberta driver’s license and have a clean driver’s abstract.
Ability to work as a team.
Ability of perform all functions of the job and can lift up to 45 pounds.
Ability to work outdoors for extended period of time under all weather conditions.
Ability to stand for long periods of time on a variety of surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, turf, etc.
Can operate small equipment with experience using common hand tools (e.g. shovel, pick, rake, pulaski, tamping bar, axe, hatchet, machete, handsaw, loppers, pruning shears, power washer, hand vacuum, and hand buffer).
These positions are part of the Canada Grant program. Therefore, hiring is dependant on funding.
COVID-19 Requirement
Successful candidates will need to be double vaccinated or provide a negative rapid COVID19 test result. The City is providing testing kits at this time, however this is based on supply. If testing kits cannot be procured as long as required, employee’s will be responsible to get rapid tested on their own time and at their own expense.
