Job Description
:
Under the direction of the Pool Supervisor, Assistant Aquatics Manager, and Aquatics Manager, the individual in this position is responsible for the health, safety and welfare of those using the recreation center swimming pool. A lifeguard’s major responsibility is to observe swimmers and enforce regulations in the guarding of life and the prevention of accidents.

Responsibilities:
Coverage Monday through Friday 4: 30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Responsible for following and carrying out all of the workplace expectations and policies of the City of Westlake and the Westlake Recreation Center.
Supervise the activities of swimmers by enforcing rules and regulations.
Warn swimmers of improper activities or hazards.
To rescue persons in distress or in danger of drowning when indicated and provide rescue breathing, CPR and First Aid.
To notify the Supervisor of any accidents, rescues or problems that have arisen.
To report to the Aquatic Manager, Assistant Aquatic Manager and/or Pool Supervisor, any equipment that is in need of repair.
To successfully and positively perform within work team dynamics.
Adherence to Workplace Expectations, encompassing communication, working relations, job reliability and initiative, safety, accomplishment of work tasks and supervision.
Peripheral Duties
:
To answer inquiries pertaining to the use of the pool.
To conduct simple tests to determine water quality.
To direct all helpful suggestions from participants and others to your direct supervisor.
Attend scheduled in-service training.
To maintain attendance and activity record and complete required reports.
To provide periodic supervision and custodial needs of locker rooms.
To perform other duties as may be assigned by his/her supervisor.
To assist in cleaning and maintaining the pool and related areas and facilities.
Arrive to work every day, on time as scheduled.
Complete
additional duties necessary to fulfill the scope of the position and as assigned by the Mayor or his designee.
Qualifications and Skills Requirements:
Must have knowledge of water hazards, lifesaving techniques and first aid, recognize hazardous situations and adopt effective courses of action.
Have effective communication skills and engage positively with the public.
Must be currently certified with American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Certification or YMCA Lifesaving Certificate and current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/FPR cards.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility. Duties require attentiveness to visual and audible cues for recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or in process of unsafe behaviors. The position requires proficient swimming ability and the proper application of rescue and first-aid techniques. This position requires the ability to properly extract victims from the pool(s) to the deck.
Must be available and flexible to work various hours during the week and weekend.
Pre-employment drug test and background check required.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk, swim, sit, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms and bend over. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50
pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Tools and Equipment Used:
Computer, including word processing software; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; mobile or portable radio; various sports equipment used in recreation program.
