   New Fire Marshal
   CHARLOTTESVILLE , VA -  
   CHARLOTTESVILLE , VA - The City of Charlottesville announces the appointment of Battalion Chief Joe Phillips as the City Fire Marshal and Fire Official .  Chief Phillips replaces Deputy Chief Joe Powers . Battalion Chief Phillips swearing - in occurred at 1:00 p . m . , at the Charlottesville Circuit Court Building .
    Chief Joe Phillips joined the Charlottesville Fire Department in January of 1999 as a Firefighter/Medic .  He has been promoted through the ranks of Fire Captain and Battalion Chief .   Phillips has served in the Fire Marshal’s Office and Community Risk Reduction ( CRR ) since 2017 . He will be responsible for the oversight of the CRR Bureau and the responsibilities of the Fire Marshal’s office .
    The Charlottesville Fire department has begun a nationwide search for a Deputy Chief of Community Risk Reduction .
