Beginning on May 4

    , 2022 , law P . L . 2020 , c . 117 goes into effect which will prohibit providing or selling single use - carryout bags and polystyrene foam food service products . This new regulation is in addition to the restriction of single - use plastic straws , which may be provided only at the request of a customer . New norms and exceptions to this plastic law will depend on the type of establishment classification outlined by the State of NJ . The State is encouraging the use of re - usable bags which must be made of nylon , cloth , or other washable fabric , have stitched handles , and be purposefully designed for multiple uses .
