On May 19 , 2022 , after a three - day trial , a Jackson County jury found Mitchell Roy Herrington , 57 , guilty of Aggravated Assault .
On May 19 , 2022 , after a three - day trial , a Jackson County jury found Mitchell Roy Herrington , 57 , guilty of Aggravated Assault . During the trial , the State presented evidence that Herrington savagely attacked his ex - girlfriend , on May 30 , 2018 , with a machete causing life - threatening injuries . The assault occurred at the victim’s apartment after she told Herrington to leave . After attacking the victim with the machete , Herrington provided no aid to her . Instead , he left her bleeding on her couch and went to a liquor store . Eventually , first responders were notified and rendered aid to the victim and transported her to Ocean Springs Hospital . The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case .
Judge Dale Harkey sentenced Herrington to twenty ( 20 ) years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections without the possibility of parole

District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath stated ,
“The jury heard the victim’s voice today and in so doing , gave her justice by holding the Defendant accountable for this intentional and vicious attack . ”
Assistant District Attorney Carolyn Lewis stated ,
“The victim in this case suffered a brutal and disfiguring machete attack by her ex - boyfriend . It is a miracle that she survived . We are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals who saved the victim’s life . ”
Assistant District Attorney Bill Barrett stated , “
The Defendant claimed he was sleepwalking at the time of the crime , but the truth was revealed at trial and the jury rejected his false claims and excuses . ”
This case was prosecuted by Bill Barrett and Carolyn Lewis .
