   Under the direction of the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, the Mechanic/Welder is responsible for performing a variety of tasks (skilled and semi-skilled) in the maintenance of the City’s vehicle and equipment fleet.  Professional training in areas specific to fleet maintenance required.

   ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIE

   The essential job duties listed below are equally of importance and must be performed to successfully meet the needs of the department.
   Diagnose, service, repair and overhaul all City owned gasoline and diesel powered vehicles including construction equipment and specialty equipment, police fleet, building and code enforcement vehicles, water department vehicles and equipment and occasionally fire department vehicles and equipment.
   Must be able to use oxy acetylene torches.
   Forklift operation a plus.
   Working knowledge of trade catalogs, parts manuals, repair manuals, and trade software.
   Welds and fabricates parts for damaged vehicles and construction equipment.
   Cleans and maintains shop area.
   Cleans dirty components or areas on vehicles to be worked on for safety and efficiency.  
   Must be able to test, operate and drive equipment vehicles.
   Must be able to operate a variety of heavy equipment as well as snow removal equipment.
   Must be able to use judgment in identifying and troubleshooting problems.
   Must be able to determine the most appropriate course of repair to the City’s motorized fleet.  
   Must be able to work well with co-workers and supervisory staff.

   QUALIFICATIONS:
   Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. 
   Minimum eight years of experience in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. 
   Current training with Snap-on, Tech II and OTC a plus. 
   ABILITY TO: 
   Maintain a working telephone number. 
   Have a class “B” C.D.L. or obtain one within the probationary period. 
   Work a schedule that varies according to work load, emergency calls and weather conditions that require overtime work. 
   Ability to learn quickly and work with minimum amount of supervision. 
   Ability and willingness to perform tasks normally performed by workers in lower classifications. 
   Must supply own tools. Specialty tools supplied by City. ($500/yr. tool allowance supplied by City) 
   PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS: 
   Maintain good physical condition that allows individual to perform strenuous tasks and a willingness to work outside in all kinds of weather. 
   Frequently perform manual labor with varying degrees of physical exertion. 
   Will be required to walk, talk, hear and stand. 
   Will be required to use arms and hands to lift, feel, carry objects, and operate tools and controls. 
   Frequently required to climb, stoop, kneel, bend, crawl, and crouch. 
   Frequently required to lift, push or pull in excess of eighty pounds. 
   Occasionally required to lift, push, or pull in excess of one hundred pounds. 
   Occasionally may be working in awkward, difficult and or unbalanced conditions. 
   ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS: 
   Worker may be subject to: 
   Outside weather conditions including extreme heat and extreme cold. 
   High places. 
   Work near moving mechanical parts. 
   Work near moving vehicles and equipment. 
   Subject to offensive odors. 
   Subject to fumes and airborne particles. 
   May work with flammables. 
   Subject to dirty conditions. 
   Subject to very loud noise levels from routine shop activities. 
   SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS: 
   Worker must be able to: 
   Have the ability to follow safety principles and practices that the City has in place. 
   Bring safety concerns or suggestions to management for consideration. 
   Have thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. 
   Have thorough knowledge of the safe use of oxygen-acetylene and arc welding equipment. 
   PUBLIC CONTACT: 
   The employee has regular contact with other City employees to provide assistance and answer any questions. There is sporadic but not rare contact with the general public when driving or operating equipment. There is occasional contact with vendors in regards to warranties, parts, and related information. 
   CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYEMENT: 
   All of the following are required: 
   Maintain valid C.D.L. class “B” driver’s license. 
   Maintain telephone in place of residence. 
   Complete six-month probationary period. 
   Ability to keep certifications current. 
   Must be available for “On Call” duty. 
   Must be available for Plowing and/or Shop Duty 7 days a week 24 hours a day Winter Season (Approximately November-April).
