   Monday. - Friday: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Winter Hours)
   Monday - Thursday: 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Summer Hours)

   $23.34 Per Hour

   Incumbent serves as Mechanic for the Highway Department, responsible for maintaining and repairing Department equipment and vehicles used for maintaining County roads and right-of-ways.  Also, serves as a Highway Maintenance Technician to help with maintenance of county road system and right-of-ways when not performing Mechanics duties.
   DUTIES:
   Performs adjustments, preventive maintenance and repairs on Department equipment, tools and vehicles according to warranties, mileage and use, such as oil and filter changes, and brake jobs.
     
   Maintains detailed records of maintenance and repair activity, including work description, parts and cost.
   Analyzes equipment and vehicle malfunction, including observing, listening and identifying problem source and solution. 
   Removes and rebuilds/repairs various parts as needed, including engines, transmissions, air conditioning units, fuel injection systems, brakes, lights and hydraulics.
   Performs various mechanical trades in repairing and fabricating parts, including welding, brazing, torch cutting, wiring and machining. Designs, fabricates and installs added features on new vehicles and equipment as needed, such as hitches, and plow frames.
   Maintains clean and orderly work areas, including sweeping, removing trash and debris and returning tools to proper storage locations.
   Maintains current knowledge of Department equipment by reading related publications and technical manuals.
   Cuts brush, trims overhanging limbs, and removes visual obstructions on county roadsides.
   Patches and seals cracks, holes, and joints on county roads, spreads oil, stone chips, dirt and blacktop.
   Collects and disposes of trash and debris on and around county roads.
   Performs carpentry tasks, such as repairing signs and fences on county roads.
   Operates equipment such as tractors, bobcat, excavator, roller and others as needed.
   Plows snow and spreads salt.

   erforms related and/or other duties as assigned.
   Serves on 24-hour call for emergencies
    
   SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
   High school diploma or GED; certification of completion of auto/diesel mechanic, or equivalent combination of education and diesel experience preferred.
     
   Must provide own tools.
   Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures and ability to properly operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles, such as wrenches, screw drivers, hammers, air compressor, paint gun, grinder, welding equipment, cutting torch, engine hoist, drill press, hydraulic jack, tap/die sets, tractors, graders, loader, trucks and backhoe.
   Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and read and interpret technical manuals, instruments, gauges and dials.
   Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, and work with others in a team environment.
   Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with co-workers, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
   Ability to occasionally work extended, weekend and/or evening hours, and occasionally to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
   Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements and demonstrated safe driving record.  
   RESPONSIBILITY:
    
   Incumbent performs a variety of moderately complex tasks, applying technical manuals and referring unusual situations to supervisor as needed.  A moderate degree of care and skill are required to protect tools and equipment and prevent injury to self and others.
    
   PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
   Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers for purposes of exchanging information.
   Incumbent reports directly to Maintenance Supervisor.
   PHYSICAL EFFORT:
   Incumbent’s duties may involve continuous physical exertion, such as standing/walking and being in cramped, uncomfortable positions for long periods, close vision, hearing mechanical sounds, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying object weighing more than 50 pounds, crouching, reaching, bending and handling/grasping/fingering objects.
   WORKING CONDITIONS:
   Incumbent performs a majority of duties in a garage and periodically in the field and is frequently exposed to heavy equipment, moving parts, noise, dust, grease, vehicle fumes, fuels and cleaning chemicals normally associated with auto maintenance and repair.
     
   Incumbent periodically performs duties outdoors and is exposed to extreme temperatures, inclement weather and traffic.
     
   Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others.
   Incumbent occasionally works extended, evening and/or weekend hours and serves on 24-hour on call for emergencies.
