   DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF CLASS:
   Performs a variety of entry-level tasks within the Department of Public Works.  
   SUPERVISION RECEIVED: 
   Supervised by a Public Works Supervisor.
   SUPERVISION EXERCISED: 
   N/A
   ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
   Under the direction of a Public Works Supervisor performs a wide variety of tasks including but not limited to: 
   Employee may be exposed to construction and reconstruction of buildings and the maintenance of the concrete infrastructure. 
   Assist in the maintenance of the parkway trees and brush pick up. 
   Assist in performing the maintenance of the storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure. 
   Assist in the fabrication, installation and maintenance of traffic control devices. 
   Assist in layout and striping of streets. 
   Assist in the maintenance of the right-of-ways landscaping. 
   Assist in the maintenance of pavement, asphalt patching, asphalt paving, asphalt crack sealing, and street sweeping.
   Drive trucks and equipment as pertaining to assigned tasks, leaf pick up and snow removal. 
   Work well with co-workers and supervisory staff.

   KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
   The incumbent must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities in order to successfully perform the essential job duties:
   Base knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment related to carpentry and concrete maintenance. 
   Base knowledge of work rules and safety regulations.
   Base knowledge of concrete work.
   Base knowledge of carpentry work.
   Base knowledge of most aspects of public works including street maintenance, forestry and landscaping.
   Base knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment related to tree trimming and to working near overhead power lines.
   Base knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment related to mowing and vegetation control.
   Base knowledge of graffiti removal.
   Base knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment related to pavement maintenance.
   Base knowledge of road maintenance practices, techniques and all equipment involved.
   Base knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in road maintenance.
   Base knowledge of street maintenance methods and the operation of equipment and tools used by the maintenance crews. These include uni-loaders, front-end loaders backhoes, asphalt rollers, asphalt paver, leaf machines, snowplows, jackhammers and various hand tools.
   Base knowledge of the operating hazards and safety precautions of the equipment and tools used by the pavement maintenance dept.
   Base knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment related sewer maintenance. 
   Ability to keep records of work performed, materials, supplies and equipment used. 
   Base knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment related to traffic control services.
   PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
   Maintain good physical condition that allows individual to perform strenuous tasks and a willingness to work outside in all kinds of weather.
   Frequently perform manual labor with varying degrees of physical exertion.
   Ability to work in confined spaces, trenching and shoring conditions.
   May be frequently required to walk, talk, hear, stand, use hands and/or fingers to lift, feel, carry, operate objects, operate tools, operate controls and reach and lift with hands and arms.
   Frequently required to climb, stoop, kneel, bend, crawl, and crouch.
   Frequently required to lift, push or pull in excess of eighty pounds.  
   Occasionally required to lift, push or pull in excess of one hundred pounds.
   Occasionally may be working in awkward, difficult and or unbalanced conditions.
   WORK ENVIRONMENT:
   Worker may be subject to:
   Outside weather conditions including extreme heat and extreme cold.
   High places.
   Work near moving mechanical parts.
   Work near moving vehicles and equipment.
   Offensive odors.
   Fumes and airborne particles.
   May work with flammables.
   Subject to dirty conditions. 
   Subject to very loud noise levels from routine activities.
   SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:
   Worker must be able to:
   Ability to follow safety principles and practices that the City has in place.
   Bring safety concerns or suggestions to management for consideration.
   Base knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
   PUBLIC CONTACT:
   The employee has regular contact with other City employees to provide assistance and answer any questions. There is sporadic but not rare contact with the general public when driving or operating equipment. 
   QUALIFIED CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
   Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.     
   Entry Level experience.
   Have and maintain a telephone in residence.
   Have a class “B” C.D.L. or obtain one within the probationary period.
   Work a schedule that varies according to;
   Work Load.
   Emergency Calls.
   Weather conditions that require overtime work.
   Ability to learn quickly and work with minimum amount of supervision.
   Ability and willingness to perform tasks normally performed by workers in lower classifications.
   CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
   All of the following are required:
   Maintain valid C.D.L. class “B” driver’s license.
   Maintain telephone in place of residence.
   Complete six-month probationary period.
