ABOUT THE LIBRARY ASSISTANT POSITION:
BDPL is seeking a creative and detail-oriented full-time Library Assistant to be join our small team. You may know BDPL has twice now won the Texas Municipal Library Director’s Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in roles of library service. Our library assistants are a signature portion of our team because they are first line employees who provide the most friendly customer service face and experience possible. Our team maintains a strong commitment to community well-being. We seek out people who wish to assist with clerical and informational support while promoting reading, library values and performance. This person performs technical routines as well as Circulation functions. This person also engages boldly with citizens. This position provides an essential role in the library and we seek out kind, respectful and supportive team members who value service above self. A highly sought after candidate is one who is a natural avid reader, values education and library values. This person works under the direct supervision of both the Assistant Librarian and the Children’s Librarian.
HOW YOUR SKILLS WILL PROVIDE SERVICE

YOU:
This role performs a wide variety of technical and clerical tasks in support of municipal library services and activities. This person’s primary role is to indirectly support acquisition, classification, processing and making available all materials. This position is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position.
TRANSACTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
: provides detailed support of technical processes.
Demonstrates a high degree of responsiveness and anticipates public need.
Catalogs and classifies materials and obtains cataloging from other sources.
Maintains statistical records.
Sorts departmental mail.
Performs cash procedure and day-end processing as needed.
Performs technical processing services.
Performs discard process of library materials.
Maintains inventory of processing supplies.
Assists in processing courier shipments.
Assists in packing and unpacking of library materials, supports billing, purchasing and claims processes.
Assists with interlibrary loans process.
Assists with library reporting procedures for both revenue and performance purposes.
Helps support social marketing efforts and public visibility campaigns.
Assists with shelving, assists with shelving conversions, inventory management and evaluating materials as directed.
Performs all functions of technical services as trained and directed.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
PUBLIC SUPPORT RESPONSIBILITIES
: Interfaces with public with engaging, supportive community assistance.
Checks materials in and out at public services. Renews materials. Answers phone, collects fees.
Provides public assistance with standard equipment, copying, faxing and other public computer assistance.
Provides basic information about the library, answers routine questions, not of an in-depth nature, while marketing the library’s products and services.
May assist with programming for adults and assist in coordinating outreach support.

Required Knowledge: Working knowledge of computer technology, printers, and copiers. Working knowledge of library software and information sources or other customer retrieval data systems. Working knowledge of maintenance procedures.
Demonstrated ability to engage with the public enthusiastically.
