Mayor Kraham Announces City , CARES Will Provide 1 , 000 Filled Backpacks to Binghamton Students
( BINGHAMTON , N . Y . )
Mayor Jared M . Krahamon Monday announced the City will partner with CARES Advocates For Families Inc . to provide 1 , 000 backpacks filled with school supplies to City of Binghamton students .
“Back - to - school shopping puts a significant financial burden on families , and rising costs are forcing more parents to choose between school supplie......s and other necessities , ” said Mayor Kraham . “Too often , it falls unfairly on our teachers to provide the supplies that some families can’t . The City is partnering again with CARES to ease the burden on families and teachers and help make sure every child in Binghamton has the supplies they need to learn and grow . ”
The filled backpacks will be available free of charge to City of Binghamton families with children in grades Pre - K through 12 . Students must be present to receive a backpack .
The backpacks will be available for pickup on a first - come , first - served basis , as follows:

“The Backpack/School Supplies Giveaway is an event that is vital to the mission of CARES , ” said
Denise Yull , President of the CARES Board of Directors , and Andre Mathis , CARES Chief Financial Officer and Board Member
. “The Giveaway event is our way of hoping that no child feels unprepared for the school year and to help if possible ease the burden of families who may not be able to get every school supply that may be needed . Just as much as it takes a village to raise a child , it takes a community to help a child be prepared for school , and that is why CARES is so grateful to the City of Binghamton , Mayor Kraham , and all of the organizations and businesses that partnered with us to make this event possible . Each backpack contains a book with a label that honors the memory of Co - Founder and former CEO of CARES Larry Parham . Larry was instrumental in getting this event started six years ago , and he was a pillar in this community , and this just one way for us to continue his legacy of helping the next generation be the best they can be . ”
This marks the sixth straight year the City has funded a backpack and school supply giveaway . More than 3 , 500 filled backpacks have been provided free of charge to students since the program started in 2017 .
Like last year , backpacks given out this year will include reusable masks , hand sanitizer , and other health and safety items related to Covid - 19 .
This year , the City is providing $13 , 160 to fund the backpack and school supply program . The funds are a combination of the City’s federal Covid - 19 relief funds and Community Development Block Grant money .
