   JOB SUMMARY:
    
   Under general supervision, performs intermittent, part-time work maintaining, repairing, and constructing county roads and rights-of-way, water and sewer systems, parks and pool facilities, and buildings and grounds by performing a variety of manual tasks, and by operating light and heavy vehicles and equipment; and by performing other work as assigned.
   DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
    
   This position is not a regular full-time or part-time position and is “at-will” dependent upon needed work. Length of employment and hours of work are at the full discretion of Storey County. This position does not qualify for health insurance or other benefits, except those legally mandated, with management retaining full rights to establish beginning and ending dates. 
   This position does not exceed 1039 hours in a fiscal year.
    
   EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
     
   The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by an employee in this position. Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below. 
   Maintains and paves roads; operates assigned equipment to maintain county dirt, gravel and paved roads and county rights-of-ways; inspects conditions to identify work needed and the appropriate tasks and equipment to complete tasks.
   Overlays streets; patches and seals cracks in asphalt; paints road markings; blades dirt and gravel roads; removes debris; repairs and maintains drainage ways, culverts, and other drainage systems; installs, repairs, and maintains traffic control devices; removes snow and other obstacles.
   Assists in constructing forms, pouring and finishing concrete, and in constructing and repairing sidewalks, ramps, curbs, gutters and drainage systems.
   Clears weeds, brush, trash and other debris from paved areas.
   Installs and repairs guard rails, signs, fences, and security barriers.
   May perform basic welding and braising.
   Assists skilled crew members and learns to perform basic tasks in such craft areas as carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, electronic and mechanical repair, and construction.
   Loads and unloads vehicles and trailers; fuels vehicles and heavy equipment; picks up and delivers materials and equipment; cleans and maintains tools and equipment; maintains work areas in a clean and orderly fashion.
   Observes safe work methods and properly uses safety and other equipment; secures work sites from traffic hazards as necessary; and attends and participates in safety meetings.
   Responds to questions and complaints from the public in a professional and courteous manner.
   Carries out assignments in a non-disruptive manner, including in heavy traffic areas, and concurrently with various activities in the immediate environment.
   Maintains basic records of work performed.
   Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of service to customers by offering suggestions and by directing or participating as an active member on a team.
   Under limited circumstances may be directed to act as a team leader, instruct others, and provide limited direction to others.
   Responds to emergency situations in off hours as required.
   Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to the position; drives and otherwise operates vehicles, and on occasions, operates light and heavy equipment.
    
    
   QUALIFICATIONS:
   Knowledge of
   equipment, materials and tools used in routine road construction, maintenance and repair work
   maintenance of assigned tools and equipment in a safe and clean operating condition
   potential hazards associated with assigned work
   requirements and regulations pertaining to employee’s CDL, if applicable
   general safety rules and regulations, and safe working procedures
    
    
   Ability to
    
   operate assigned equipment safely and skillfully, in all types of weather and work situations
   perform the physical duties of the work in all types of weather conditions
   perform routine sustained manual labor tasks including heavy lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling
   exhibit effective communication skills; understand and follow verbal and written direction and instructions
   learn a variety of work skills associated with road maintenance and repair operations
   safely and efficiently use a variety of manual and power tools
   drive a pickup truck or other light-duty vehicle in a safe and courteous manner
   read, understand, and follow safety rules and regulations and county policies and procedures
   establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and superiors
   maintain courteous and professional demeanor with coworkers, supervisors, and the public
   remain composed and professional during stressful situations
   adapt to change in policies, work environment, personnel, and assignments
   perform basic math calculations
    
   LICENSING, EDUCATION & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
   Any combination of training, education, and experience that provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain required knowledge and abilities is a combination of training, education, and experience which includes performing sustained physical labor, including road construction and similar activities; or similar work which includes operation of equipment of the type used in the position and by Storey County. On-the-job training to fulfill these requirements may be provided.
   Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Nevada Driver License. Applicants with either Class or Class B Commercial Driver Licenses may receive preference.
   Persons offered employment in this position with a Commercial Driver License may be subject to random testing for controlled substances during employment as required by federal law.
   Storey County requires prospective employees to submit to and pass a background investigation as a condition for employment.
   Must possess sufficient knowledge of English grammar, vocabulary, and spelling to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in written form.  
    
   PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT: 
   The requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
   Physical Requirements.
   Strength, stamina, and dexterity to sit in vehicles operating on rough roads and rough surfaces for sustained periods of time with only brief breaks; walk and perform duties on uneven or slippery surfaces for sustained periods; perform heavy manual tasks using manual hand tools such as shovels, picks, and rakes; perform repetitive motions including use of controls with hands and feet, climb up steps and ladders; reach to adjust and make minor repairs on equipment and vehicles; manual dexterity to operate controls on equipment; strength to occasionally lift and carry containers and parts for equipment weighing in excess of 50 pounds; visual acuity sufficient to operate equipment in a variety of lighting conditions, including bright light, low light, and low visibility conditions; depth perception sufficient to maneuver equipment and to determine position of equipment components; and ability to hear changes in operation of motors and other equipment.

   Working Environment.
   Indoor and outdoor weather conditions; highways, roads, and other environments having little to no temperature control; may be exposed to extreme heat, cold, wind, sun, rain, snow, and ice; works on uneven and/or slippery surfaces, including slopes, excavations, trenches, and ditches; may be exposed to hazardous conditions including heavy and light equipment and tools, toxic or caustic chemicals and materials, and other environmental conditions typical of construction sites; may occasionally be required to operate heavy equipment in hazardous environments; noise level in the work environment is generally loud and inconsistent.
