   Certification fees vary per location.  (Fee is reimbursable upon successful completion of employment season)
   Must be 15 years old by course completion date
   Pre-requisites for the course include:
   Nonstop 100-yard swim
   10lb brick retrieval
   1-minute breath hold
   *Certification Courses taught elsewhere may also be acceptable; the above list are just a few options.
    
   JOB SUMMARY:
    Under general direction of the Public Works Director or his/her designee, enforces water safety regulations, and guards swimmers at swimming facility, promoting patron health, safety, and enjoyment.
   DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
    This is the entry level position in the Lifeguard series. The Lifeguard I classification is distinguished from the Lifeguard II classification 
   by the amount of experience and training required in relation to the Lifeguard II classification.
   EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
     
   The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by an employee in this position. Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below. 
   This is a seasonal less-than part-time (<1,039 hours/yr.) position.
   Enforces rules and regulations pertaining to pool operation and safety and supervises pool areas when in use.
   Maintains constant surveillance and visually scans assigned area of responsibility with high frequency (i.e., every 10 seconds). Walks the area to monitor activities, provides directives, and fosters accident prevention.
   Administers First-Aid and/or CPR as needed; performs water rescue functions.
   Functions as a crew member within an emergency plan for the handling of accidents in pool areas.
   Maintains standards of facility sanitation, assisting with cleaning and general maintenance of the facility.
   Checks visitors into the swimming facility and collects fees.
   Attends meetings and training sessions, as required.
   Performs duties of cashier as necessary.
   Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
   Maintains proper physical fitness, mental alertness, and readiness to meet emergencies.
   Performs related duties as required.
   QUALIFICATIONS:
   Knowledge of
   life saving and water techniques;
   First-Aid and CPR procedures;
   rules and regulations pertaining to the swimming pool facility; 
   pool equipment operation and health standards;
   swimming and water safety instruction techniques; and
   occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
   Ability to
   recognize emergency and dangerous situations and react quickly and calmly;
   swim with proficiency and endurance;
   enforce established policies, rules and regulations;
   understand and follow oral and written instructions;
   respond to requests and inquiries from the general public and employees;
   communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and
   establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
   .
   LICENSING, EDUCATION & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
   Current certifications in Lifeguard Training, First-Aid Basics, CPR for Professional Rescuer, and American Red Cross Community CPR.
   Must possess sufficient knowledge of English grammar, vocabulary and spelling to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in written form.  
   Storey County requires prospective employees to submit to and pass a background investigation as a condition for employment in this position.

   PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT: 
   The requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
   Physical Requirements.
   Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, reach, sit, and stand for long periods of time. Dexterity and
    ability to walk on slippery and uneven surfaces and climb a ladder.  
   Strength and 
   ability to swim and maintain sustained physical exertion, including ability to lift and pull an average size adult person off the bottom of and out of a filled pool.  Ability to see and hear swimmers in distress. Ability to talk, taste, smell, and see (both far and near). Ability to tolerate exposure to constant noise, sun, solvents, and chemicals. 
   Strength, dexterity, and ability to carry up to 50 pounds. The ability to communicate via telephone.

   Working Environment. 
   Indoor and outdoor weather conditions with little to no temperature control and routine exposure to the sun; may be exposed to extreme heat, cold, wind, and rain; works on uneven and/or slippery surfaces; may be exposed to hazardous conditions including toxic or caustic chemicals; and required to work well under stressful emergency situations. Noise level in the work environment is generally quiet in the office and moderately loud in the field area.
