Jackson County will celebrate EARTH DAY by hosting its
Annual “Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day” for Jackson County residents on Saturday , April 30 , 2022 from 8 a . m . – Noon in the Singing River Mall Parking Lot .
Approximately 40 different types of items that are considered household hazardous waste will be accepted during this free one - day event , which will take place rain or shine .
Jackson County Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this turn - in by cleaning up around their houses and property and collecting of some of their household hazardous waste for proper disposal .
“This is considered a great way to continue to protect the environment and celebrate Earth Day , ” Solid Waste Director Ronda Powell says . “Proper disposal of these chemicals and products are important to our health and our environment . ”
Acceptable products should be left in their original containers . However , to help reduce expenses , water - based paints can and should be consolidated into as few containers as possible for the event . Empty water - based paint cans can be thrown into household garbage after the paint has dried .
Residents are also asked to ensure all containers are sealed and transported in the trunk or back of a vehicle away from passengers . This will keep everyone safe from toxic fumes and allow volunteers to remove the items without the need of anyone exiting the vehicle .
There are several items that will not be accepted including:
explosive or radioactive materials , PCB’s , medical or biological waste , business waste , household garbage , electronic waste or compressed cylinders , no 55 - gallon drums and tires are limited to 5 and must be off the rim .
The annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day event is a community service funded by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality in cooperation with the Jackson County Board of Supervisors , Municipalities , and other in - kind services provided by local businesses and industries . This event would not be successful without the dedicated volunteers and the Jackson County Solid Waste Department .
Checklist to Prepare for and What to Expect During the One - Day Event
Preparing for the event –
Ensure items are acceptable (

)
Waste must be in original containers
Water - based paints should be consolidated into as few paint cans as possible
Place empty water - base paint cans in household garbage AFTER paint remnants have dried
Place sealed containers in trunk or back of truck
At the event , while in line –
Stay in your vehicle at all times
Complete a short form ( name , address , type/quantity of items )
Pop your trunk so volunteers can access the items
Follow instructions from volunteers as you slowly proceed through the line
