After a public search for the next 2nd Ward city councilmember , including an open application process and community candidate forum , Mayor Daniel Biss has announced his appointment of Krissie Harris to fill the position pending approval from City Council on Monday , September 12 .
"As a 5th generation Evanstonian , Krissie has deep roots in our community and brings an action - oriented , collaborative approach to solving problems and making our city stronger , ” said Mayor Biss . “ I look forward to working wi......th Krissie as a member of our City Council and I extend my sincere thanks to all of the excellent candidates who applied for this position . ”
“I am so honored to further serve the community which has given much to my development , ” said Harris . “I look forward to building on the great work of our past and present elected officials , City staff and community members . ”
Harris continued , “Evanston , we have work to do . This work is not mine alone , it is the work of the collective . Let’s go!”
Meet Krissie Harris
Krissie Harris is a 49 - year resident of Evanston and has lived in the City’s 2nd Ward for 23 years . Harris’s strong track record of community service includes serving as a trustee of 2nd Baptist Church , volunteering at C&W’s weekly food giveaway program , and being an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority , Inc . Harris has also served on the boards of YWCA Evanston/North Shore , the Dajae Coleman Foundation , Family Focus Auxiliary Board , and others .
Harris currently works as manager of student life and campus inclusion at Oakton Community College and also works part - time at the Levy Senior Center as a front desk supervisor , a position she will leave following her appointment to City Council .
In applying to be 2nd Ward councilmember , Harris expressed her desire to improve community safety , provide trauma - informed care to support community healing , and promote fiscal responsibility and financial stewardship .
Under state law , the appointed and approved candidate will serve until the municipal election in 2023 .
