Hey , check this out! The Department of Housing and Urban Development just announced that Ronit Mecham and Voyl "Tom" Mecham , the owner and property manager of a place in Jamestown , New York , are in trouble for not letting a tenant with a disability have her assistance animal . Can you believe it? It ' s a violation of the Fair Housing Act , which is all about making sure people with disabilities are treated fairly . These guys refused to make a reasonable accommodation for this tenant , like letting her have her animal even though they had a "no pet" policy . And get this , they even made comments that showed they preferred tenants without disabilities . Not cool , right? But don ' t worry , HUD is on it and they ' re gonna enforce the Act to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities . They ' ve filed a charge of discrimination against Ronit Mecham and Voyl "Tom" Mecham , and it ' s gonna go to an Administrative Law Judge . If the judge finds that discrimination happened , they could award damages to the tenants and make the Mechams pay attorney fees . So , if you ever face housing discrimination , make sure to reach out to HUD or the Department of Justice for help . They ' ve got your back!
